Our firm values active participation in our profession’s architectural and design communities. Our firm is an active participant in the local AIA chapter, the Boston Society of Architects. We are also a founding member of the Society’s Cape and Islands Network, an organization that brings together the creative talent of architects across Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket. Our staff holds architectural certification in multiple states throughout New England. Our firm’s marketing department is an active participant in the Society for Marketing Professionals Services. Members of our team make frequent presentations to local and national design forums and serve as critics or judges for national design competitions.
Our involvement in local building initiatives keeps our team informed about current rules and regulations, construction projects in the area, and allows us to give back to the diverse communities of the Cape and Islands. The firm itself has contributed to affordable housing initiatives and participates in various land conservation planning agencies. Firm members have participated in their local conservation commissions and historic district commissions. We encourage employees to take on roles in local planning and zoning boards across the region.
The Cape and Islands have a rich and vibrant artisan tradition from traditional blacksmiths and tin knockers to photographers, potters, and specialty painters. We appreciate the practiced skill and incalculable knowledge that individual artists can bring to a home. We make every effort to collaborate with local artisans in the creation of our homes, which often incorporate work by local stonemasons, cabinet makers, metalsmiths, glass blowers, sculptors, timber framers, to name a few of the disciplines. These works lend a unique, regional quality to a project, one which is highly valued by both our employees and our clients.
Our practice is deeply and inherently committed to sustainable design. We create well built homes that adapt to our clients needs throughout the generations. Our process of design is both site responsive and bound to the time tested building methods and materials of the New England landscape. This idea is linked to our ever evolving knowledge and use of emerging technologies in the creation of durable and energy efficient structures. Our team designed the first LEED Certified custom designed single family home on Martha’s Vineyard. We are members of the U.S. Green Building Council, and several of our designers hold LEED AP certifications.
HA seeks to encourage and reward those students who pursue an academic and professional career in the allied design fields, recognizing a duty to protect, preserve, and improve the educational opportunities of the next generation of designers. We have long participated with local schools on the Cape and Islands to provide financial assistance to students who will shape the future of our profession. Our firm has been a founding supporter and organizer of the Lyceum Fellowship (www.lyceum-fellowship.org), a unique annual design competition and travel grant for young aspiring architects established in 1985.
